Gadget Joy

Asher playing with Sooki in the other room.  Air conditioning blowing gently across the couch to offset the oven outside and the smokin’ laptop in here.  NyQuil taking the edge off the boogeys.  iTunes, iPhone, Pandora and some bass-lovin’ headphones.  Oh yeah… I’m happy.

P.S.  Courtesy of Gizmodo, these recreations of famous photos using legos are so cool.  This would be a fun in-class activity Melo - although with funner/lighter photos.  These political ones might be meaningless to third graders.

Travel Anticipation

I have been reading a book entitled, “the Art of Travel” by Alain de Botton . He points out that often our anticipation about a pending trip is much more abstract than the experience itself.  We only envision how things will be at certain moments in time.  Standing in Times Square looking up.  Looking down in to the remains of Ground Zero.  Marveling at the expanse of Central Park or seeing the New York City skyline from across the Hudson River.  But we rarely envision the trivialities and often difficulties that lead up to these moments.  For example, I am currently on a plane about to receive a beverage service from a helpful attendant with my four-year-old son sitting in the seat next to me.  The hours that led up to this moment can be summarized with only a few words… fatigue, missing kitty doll, tears and fear, momentary excitement, and boredom.  Sitting in one spot for four hours is about as torturous as it gets for dear Asher.  But the only reason these things will possibly stay in memory is that I’m also writing about them.  Normally the only thing I would remember about this day is my reunion with my husband in a hour or two at the house we are renting for the summer and my first impressions of Hoboken, New Jersey.  I asked Bryan last night what he remembers about his first day there and he laughed that his first impression was of the Sopranos theme song as he took a taxi from Newark to Hoboken.  That and how cool it was that he could buy a six pack of beer and bring it into a restaurant without paying a corking (tabbing?) fee.

Not Quite There Yet

So Asher and I haven’t quite made it over to New York City yet, but I thought it would probably be good to start this blog off with the moment things started getting strange.  And having Bryan off in New York City without me (!!!) and being home with Asher is definitely a change of pace.  Yes, I’m single-momming it for a week.  Wow… what a lot of hard work.  Thankfully I have many family members and friends (thank you moms, Joe, and Sharla!) who are helping me both with Asher and with getting ready.
