I’ve been enjoying reading one of Utah’s local visual arts magazines online for a year or so and recently subscribed to receive it via email. It includes articles on recent gallery shows and emerging artists among other things. The other day Shawn Rossiter, the magazine’s editor, sent out a request to refer friends of the arts to the magazine for subscriptions. Seems like a worthy cause to me. If you are interested in subscribing to 15 Bytes (it’s free!) please follow this link to their subscription page:

One of the most interesting and helpful articles in their recent edition was on the Springville Museum’s Spring Salon. It included a link to the Springville Salon website, which in turn leads to a movie of selected submissions this year, which was very cool to watch. I’m glad such things are made available online for those of us who do not wish to go ’south’ for a nice long bit after moving away.

I thought I would post a few images of a small oil sketch I did of Asher yesterday.
This first image shows four intermediate steps. The initial wash of color and the beginning sketch were done with burnt umber and ivory black. Highlights and midtones were then added with titanium white, a bit of yellow ochre and cad red, burnt umber and black.
The second image shows where I decided to leave the sketch. The final highlights were done with titanium white, yellow ochre and cad red. A few deep darks were added with ivory black.

The Utah Design Arts 2005 will be hosting a reception this evening at the Rio Gallery to showcase the work of 10 artists and designers. It will be from 6-9. Caroline Lavoie (a friend of a friend) is one of the artist/designers. Thanks Allison and Brian for the heads up. We’ll start there I think.

Here is a little sneak peek at my latest project. Just completed today in my fashionable new garage-studio, this simple figure painting will be the first in a series of similar paintings focusing on figure-only compositions. This more sculpture-like aproach to composition will allow me to work on portraying more subtle, general themes and will require me to rely only on the facial expression, body language and colors of the figure to do so. This is a big break from my other work which relies very much on the context given by the background elements.
This image is a cropped version of the larger painting and was taken indoors in somewhat poor light. As I am able, I will post better images of this piece, and those that follow. I am toying with the idea of posting a few in-progress shots of the next painting as well.

I’m looking forward to taking a leisurely stroll through downtown Salt Lake (and its perimeter) this Friday to get re-acquainted with local art efforts. This month’s Gallery Stroll should be lovely with the warmer weather. If we’re lucky we’ll bump into city mayor Rocky Anderson. We promise to walk more than drive. The “Gathering of Glass” at the Patrick Moore gallery looks promising and we’ll make a point of stopping into The Stable Fine Arts gallery to see paintings by two of our favorite local artists William Whitaker and Kamille Corry. If you see us, come say hi!

Greetings from our new undisclosed Larsen base of operations,
Yes.. Lehi was just a little too … well … how to put it… Remote? Peaceful? So we’ve been exhaustively boxing things, moving it all into storage, and living out of boxes for the time being etc. to be nearer to the bustling metropolis of Salt Lake City. Wish us luck finding new swankier downtown digs in this crazy housing market. If only we knew of a nice fixer-upper in oh… the Avenues or 15th and 15th or Sugarhouse… with an art studio in back! Let us know if you hear of such a thing.
As far as the art production goes, we’ve gone from this:
to a cold, cold basement. Oh well, it goes with the tormented artist thing.
So far everyone seems to be dealing with the move very well. Better than I expected anyway….
I’m going to try turning the comments on. We’ll see how it goes.

Howdy. Just checking to see how to post here. For anyone looking for current posts by me, please swing by the Artist’s Studio at Quent Cordair Fine Art. I’ll be tied up there until my new painting, Icarus, is completed. Hasta luego.
